Academic Departments

The College of Engineering and Applied Sciences at Stony Brook University has nine academic departments. The College offers 13 undergraduate majors, consisting of nine ABET-accredited programs, as well as 12 master's degree programs and 12 doctoral degree programs. Its faculty body includes distinctions such as 66 NSF Career awards; 16 SUNY Distinguished Professorships; members of the National Academy of Engineering; as well as recipients of the National Medal of Science and the National Medal of Technology. Students may study within traditional engineering disciplines or in interdisciplinary fields and find work in the industry or pursue graduate study.

Applied Math and Statistics

The Department of Applied Mathematics and Statistics at Stony Brook University consists of approximately 30 faculty, 6 staff, over 300 graduate students, and nearly 800 undergraduate students, and offers a flexible and intellectually diverse undergraduate degree program, together with graduate degree programs with specialties in computational applied mathematics, computational biology, statistics, operations research, and quantitative finance. It also offers MS and PhD degrees in data science (DAS) in collaboration with the Department of Computer Science.

Biomedical Engineering

The Department of Biomedical Engineering at Stony Brook University has 20 core faculty and over 50 faculty who are affiliated with our program and recognized internationally in the areas of biomechanics, biomaterials, biotechnology, cell, molecular and tissue engineering, biosensors, biosystems modeling, bioinstrumentation, and medical imaging. The department provides students with a range of bioengineering challenges, from the design of molecular based biosensors to high-resolution functional imaging of the brain, and offers the opportunity to work in world-class labs here at Stony Brook University, Brookhaven National Laboratory, or Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory.

Biomedical Informatics

The Department of Biomedical Informatics (BMI) at Stony Brook University is recognized for its interdisciplinary approach to advancing healthcare through technology and data-driven solutions. Dually housed in the School of Medicine and the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences, the BMI department is renowned for its research in biomedical and healthcare artificial intelligence methods, clinical informatics and multi-modal data analysis. BMI collaborates closely with healthcare providers and industry partners to innovate in areas such as personalized medicine, healthcare analytics, and biomedical data science. Faculty expertise spans translational bioinformatics, clinical informatics, electronic health records, medical imaging informatics, and computational biology, fostering a dynamic learning environment for students pursuing degrees at the undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral levels. The department's commitment to translating research into practice equips graduates with the skills to address contemporary challenges in healthcare delivery and biomedical research.

Civil Engineering

The Department of Civil Engineering at Stony Brook University is one of the youngest departments, and our growth is guided by progressive thinking as we train the next generation of civil engineers. Our faculty focus on environmental chemistry, experimental and computational mechanics, systems engineering, and advanced infrastructure systems. Accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET), our civil engineering program offers students a broad disciplinary education in the areas of environmental, geotechnical, hydraulic, structural, and transportation engineering. The graduate program is growing robustly in size, quality, and achievements.

Computer Science

The Department of Computer Science is among the largest departments of Stony Brook University. The department offers undergraduate degrees in computer science (CSE) and information systems (ISE) and MS and PhD degrees in computer science (CSE). It also offers MS and PhD degrees in data science (DAS) in collaboration with the Department of Applied Mathematics & Statistics. The department has 60 full-time faculty members and over 2200 students in all its undergraduate, master's and doctoral programs combined. The department offers multiple specializations in its undergraduate and master's programs. The undergraduate program in computer science is ABET-accredited. It also offers an honors program with advanced classes and directed research opportunities. The department is active in research and engaged in all areas of computer science. The department has research partnerships across all colleges in Stony Brook in wide-ranging areas, including engineering, natural and social sciences and medicine.

Electrical and Computer Engineering

The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Stony Brook University offers a Bachelor of Engineering in electrical engineering or computer engineering. There is also an opportunity for transfer students to study two years online and earn a Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering. All three programs are accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET). Our program offers three Master of Science degrees in electrical engineering, computer engineering, and engineering artificial Intelligence, and two doctorate degrees in electrical engineering, and computer engineering.  The department has 30 full-time faculty, with a broad range of research from power system engineering to artificial intelligence to smart energy systems.

Materials Science and Chemical Engineering

The Department of Materials Science and Chemical Engineering at Stony Brook University offers undergraduate programs in Engineering Science and Chemical and Molecular Engineering and graduate programs in Materials Science and Chemical Engineering. We have a vibrant, active department in which undergraduate students, graduate students, faculty and staff work together to tackle grand challenges that require new materials and processes. Our department is home to many research centers including an EFRC on Energy Storage technologies, the Center for Mesoscale Transport Properties, the Garcia Polymer Center and the Center for Thermal Spray Technologies. Students can specialize in biomedical engineering, biotechnology, mechanical and manufacturing engineering, electrical electronics engineering, materials science and engineering, civil engineering, environmental engineering, nanoscale engineering, and engineering management.

Mechanical Engineering

The Department of Mechanical Engineering at Stony Brook University offers a Bachelor of Engineering in Mechanical Engineering, as well as an accelerated BE/MS program, and graduate programs leading to the Master of Science and the Doctor of Philosophy degrees. The ABET-accredited undergraduate curriculum embodies the core engineering discipline, providing a strong technical foundation that often leads to a broad range of career opportunities in both engineering practice and scientific research. Graduate programs offer areas of concentration in mechanical design and manufacturing, energy technology, robotics, solid mechanics, and fluid mechanics and thermal sciences. The faculty is active in cutting-edge, cross-disciplinary research, with funding from federal and state agencies such as the National Science Foundation, Department of Defense, Brookhaven National Laboratory, and from private industry. Students are encouraged to work directly with the faculty through technical electives, research, and hands-on design projects.

Technology and Society

The Department of Technology and Society at Stony Brook University offers a Bachelor of Science in technological systems management, a Master of Science in technological systems management and a doctorate in technology, policy and innovation. The undergraduate program spends time examining the relationship between technology and society. The master's program focuses on engineering management, technology and engineering education and resilience. The doctorate program is multidisciplinary with a focus on science and technology policy and innovation. At the heart of our mission is the desire to cultivate a deep understanding of the profound impact technology has on our world.
