Federal Relations

seawolves on the hill

Stony Brook University has deep partnerships with federal government agencies and strong relationships with our federal representatives.

Located in Washington, DC, Stony Brook University’s Office of Federal Relations serves as the university’s liaison to the federal government.  Its primary purpose is to identify opportunities with federal partners (Congress, White House, and federal agencies) to advance the mission of Stony Brook University and Stony Brook Medicine.  We develop and lead strategic federal advocacy campaigns on behalf of the University and Hospital, in addition to performing policy analysis and appropriations tracking.

Drawing upon the resources of the University and Hospital, the Office of Federal Relations engages and educates key stakeholders in Washington on Stony Brook’s priorities, including providing robust and sustainable federal funding for student financial aid, science research, and public hospitals.  We also provide assistance when inviting federal representatives to campus and serve as a resource for the Stony Brook campus community seeking to share information and foster communications on federal matters.

The Office of Federal Relations represents the University and Hospital on the government relations councils of national organizations such as the Association of American Universities (AAU), Association of Public and Land-Grant universities (APLU), The Science Coalition (TSC),  Association of Academic Medical Centers (AAMC), and others.

We join with these organizations to help formulate transformational legislative policy and develop critical national advocacy campaigns that enable Stony Brook and our fellow research institutions to advance the nation's innovation, boost economic development, and enhance national security.
